[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 5 “Last Rites.”]
In the most recent episode of NCIS: Origins, Mike Franks, played by Kyle Schmid, fulfills a promise made to the sister of a homicide victim. This week’s narrative unfolds after Vera, Franks’ former partner, leaves. Franks finds himself investigating a double murder involving a wife and her lover, who were killed by her husband, while the woman’s body remains undiscovered. With the husband’s execution date looming, Franks cunningly strikes a deal with him, using the opportunity to uncover the burial site of the missing woman, a task he pledged to complete for her sister. Throughout this process, Franks engages in crucial dialogues—one with Tish (Tonantzin Carmelo), which reveals his motivations for making the promise, and another with Mary Jo (Tyla Abercrumbie), where she provides insight into the case and the file associated with it.
Schmid reflects on these significant interactions in the episode, emphasizing the depth of Franks’ relationships.
I was particularly struck by the scene between Franks and Mary Jo; she seems to be one of the few who can truly connect with him during these difficult moments.
Kyle Schmid: I completely agree. Everyone needs that guiding presence, and for Franks, Mary Jo serves as that anchor. She plays a pivotal role in his life and reflects the qualities he possesses. Franks often feels the weight of those around him, and he’s determined to protect those he cares about, including Lala [Mariel Molino], Randy [Caleb Foote], and Gibbs [Austin Stowell]. Despite his gruff demeanor, he embodies a protective spirit for them. Mary Jo, in return, acts as a guardian angel not just for Franks but for many others, and Tyla’s portrayal of her is exceptional.
There’s a line where Mary Jo mentions the file related to Pedro Hernandez, noting that he would only respond to her in that manner. It’s as if she holds a unique influence over him.
[Smiles cautiously] Indeed, her influence is distinct. And there are some unexpected developments on the horizon that you’ll want to keep an eye on.
Shifting to Franks’ dynamic with Tish, there’s a poignant moment where she questions his past with Julie, and his response is notably sincere. It feels like it’s the first moment he truly pauses to reflect.
Tish uniquely grounds Franks, compelling him to cut through the chaos that often clouds his judgment. At this juncture, we see Franks pursuing one goal with blinders on. Their relationship is deeply significant—Tish is likely the most important person in Franks’ life. She has consistently supported him, even in his darkest hours. Their bond illuminates Franks’ struggle; he initially fails to notice how his obsession with the case affects both his life and Tish’s. When Tish hints at the possibility of an affair, it serves as a wake-up call for Franks, forcing him to confront the chaos he has allowed to permeate their relationship. Realizing that he has caused her to doubt him is devastating for him and underscores the depth of their connection.
Franks’ character continues to evolve, showcasing his loyalties and hidden vulnerabilities. He’s much more than a tough exterior; at his core, he is incredibly compassionate and seeks to protect those around him, often while carrying their burdens.
As for Gibbs and the psych evaluation situation, how would Franks react to Lala disclosing sensitive information about it?
Franks would likely feel betrayed by Lala for sharing that information without his consent. However, at the same time, he has unwavering faith in Gibbs. He believes Gibbs has the resilience to overcome his psychological struggles. As disappointing as Lala’s actions may be, he acknowledges the importance of timing. Gibbs has shown signs of healing, particularly evident in how he saved a young girl in Episode 4, indicating he’s beginning to confront his past traumas. This revelation in Gibbs’ evaluation could align with his journey towards recovery.
Looking ahead, can you tease any developments for Franks, especially regarding his relationship with Gibbs’ father, played by Robert Taylor?
That was a highlight, wasn’t it? Working with Robert is always a pleasure. His performance in Episode 5 was particularly moving, especially during the flashback and hospital scenes. I’m eager for more interactions between our characters.
Currently, we’re in the midst of filming Episodes 10 and 11, while also reflecting on the previous episodes. The relationship between Franks and Gibbs’ “probie” will be pivotal as the story unfolds. Franks has significantly influenced Gibbs’ development over the years, contributing to the leader the audience knows from NCIS.
Expect to see important developments in Franks’ relationship with Lala. Audiences should remember she was like a Gibbs figure to him before Gibbs arrived. Their dynamic will shift as Gibbs takes on greater prominence in Franks’ life. This transition offers an exciting opportunity to explore how family dynamics evolve when a new member joins. In upcoming episodes, Caleb Foote (Randy) delivers stellar performances, promising memorable storylines. There’s an entire episode dedicated to Franks and his probie that fans will find extraordinary. Furthermore, a remarkable Christmas episode will delve into Gibbs’ backstory, shedding light on his character development.
I’ve been in this industry for 30 years, and I’ve never been more excited about a project than I am about this one.
NCIS: Origins airs Mondays at 10/9c on CBS.
