Mohanlal’s L2: Empuraan Approaches the Rs 100 Crore Milestone
The highly anticipated political thriller, L2: Empuraan, featuring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, is making waves at the box office and is close to reaching the impressive Rs 100 crore mark. Since its release on March 27, the film has maintained strong audience interest, continuing to draw viewers into its second week.
As of its second Sunday, L2: Empuraan has achieved remarkable success, with earnings of Rs 4.25 crore, raising its total domestic collection to Rs 98.35 crore, according to the latest figures available from Sacnilk.com.
The film had an explosive debut, grossing Rs 21 crore on its opening day, setting a new record for Malayalam cinema. Despite experiencing a typical drop of 45% on the following day with Rs 11.5 crore, the film regained momentum over the weekend, earning an additional Rs 13.25 crore.
By the end of its first week, L2: Empuraan had secured an impressive Rs 84.35 crore net within India. As it continues to perform steadily, it is on track to becoming one of the quickest Malayalam films to cross the Rs 100 crore threshold.
The film’s second Sunday saw strong attendance, with a notable 33.90% occupancy in Malayalam screenings across theaters.
Despite being well-received by audiences and critics alike, L2: Empuraan has encountered some controversy. The film’s narrative, which incorporates elements from the 2002 Gujarat riots, has drawn criticism from various groups labeling it as “anti-national.” The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) intervened, recommending cuts, which resulted in a total of 24 scenes being edited from the film. After these adjustments, including alterations to sequences related to the riots, the film was granted a new certification, with approximately 2 minutes and 8 seconds removed from the original runtime.
In this sequel, Mohanlal returns as Stephen Nedumpally, also known as Khureshi Ab’raam. He embarks on a powerful journey aided by Zayed, played by Prithviraj Sukumaran, as he comes back from abroad to confront Chief Minister Jathin Ramdas, portrayed by Tovino Thomas, and reclaim his influence.
The film has garnered major acclaim, with critics highlighting its ability to stand alone despite being a sequel. A review from News18 Showsha noted that “Empuraan expands the plot of its predecessor, Lucifer, introducing heightened stakes through dual narratives. One centers on pressing local issues in Kerala, while the other explores an international clash between rival crime syndicates. Though the integration of the two storylines may feel somewhat abrupt, the film’s direction and writing effectively engage the audience and affirm support for the plot.”
