Adam Peaty Aims for 2028 Olympics After IOC Confirms 50m Sprint Events
Adam Peaty has announced his intent to compete in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, following the confirmation from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that 50-meter sprint swimming events will be included in the upcoming event schedule.
The 30-year-old swimmer, who has previously hesitated to commit to competing in Los Angeles, expressed a definitive interest, stating he would “100%” participate if the 50m breaststroke was part of the lineup. Peaty is the reigning world record holder in this discipline, with a remarkable time of 25.95 seconds achieved during the 2017 World Championships held in Budapest.
In light of the IOC’s recent announcement, Peaty expressed his excitement through an Instagram post, stating, “50m sprint events have just been added to @la28games which confirms my attempt to be at my fourth Olympic Games.” He further emphasized the significance of this inclusion for the sport, remarking, “This is the best result for our incredible sport and will allow more people to be part of it and stay in it much longer. Thank you @world_aquatics for this amazing decision.”
Peaty, a six-time Olympic medallist, will not be part of a select group of 57 elite British swimmers designated for support by Aquatics GB through 2025. Despite his decision to take a two-year hiatus from competitive swimming after winning a silver medal at the Paris Olympics last summer, he plans to continue training actively.
While still involved with the British swimming program, Peaty is currently following an adjusted training regimen. In addition to the breaststroke, the IOC confirmed that the 50m events for backstroke and butterfly will also be included in the Olympic schedule, promising to add more excitement and competition to the upcoming games.
