New Legal Network Launched to Support Federal Workers Facing Layoffs

Amid significant layoffs impacting federal employees, a coalition of unions and advocacy groups has announced the establishment of a legal resource network aimed at assisting government workers. This initiative, known as the Rise Up: Federal Workers Legal Defense Network, seeks to enlist attorneys who can provide individualized legal guidance for federal employees concerned about job security or those who have already lost their positions.

The network’s mission is to address the needs of numerous federal workers who may be victims of unlawful terminations or who are uncertain about their rights. “Our network is already engaged in efforts to combat illegal firings and other violations against federal personnel,” states the coalition on its website. “However, the need for extensive legal support is evident, and we aim to mobilize a significant number of lawyers to assist.”

Employees can report their circumstances if they believe they were unjustly dismissed or require advice on their legal rights. The network will then pair them with a lawyer for an initial discussion, followed by a possible consultation, both offered free of charge.

Key organizations involved in this coalition include the AFL-CIO, the American Federation of Government Employees, and the National Treasury Employees Union, alongside legal advocacy entities such as Democracy Forward and the Partnership for Public Service. Many of these organizations are actively pursuing legal action against the previous administration.

NTEU National President Doreen Greenwald emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting, “The Federal Workers Legal Defense Network is an invaluable resource for federal employees whose jobs and livelihood are jeopardized by the current administration’s negative impact on the federal workforce.” Greenwald commended the commitment of numerous attorneys willing to volunteer their skills for the benefit of career civil servants, reinforcing the value of the federal workforce to the nation.

Max Stier, President and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service, also expressed support for the network, asserting on X that the initiative represents a stand against the Department of Government Efficiency, which has been associated with recent workforce reductions backed by tech billionaire Elon Musk. “No one should lose their job due to the motivations of an unelected billionaire,” Stier remarked.

According to the coalition’s website, any further legal representation following the initial consultation will depend on the attorney’s discretion, with options for pro bono, discounted, or standard fee arrangements.

Federal employees seeking legal guidance can submit their requests for assistance here.
