Although she initially faced some backlash, Michelle Randolph’s portrayal of Ainsley Norris in Landman quickly gained popularity among viewers. Since its launch on November 17, 2024, Landman has emerged as one of the top-performing original series on Paramount+, a success attributed to both its gripping narrative and strong performances from its cast. As the series progressed, Ainsley underwent significant character development, evolving from a one-dimensional, overly sexualized figure to a more complex young woman seeking a meaningful relationship.
With strong indications hinting at a renewal for a second season of Landman, official confirmation is still pending. Fans eager to see more of Randolph may have to be patient, though she is set to appear in another Taylor Sheridan project very soon. Randolph will reprise her role in the second season of 1923, which is slated to premiere on February 23, 2025.
Who Does Michelle Randolph Play in ‘1923’?
Returning after more than two years, Randolph takes on the character of Elizabeth “Liz” Strafford in 1923. This series features an impressive cast, including industry giants Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, and acts as a prequel to Sheridan’s acclaimed series Yellowstone. The storyline follows a new generation of the Dutton family as they face the multifaceted challenges of the early 20th century, including pandemics, droughts, and the Great Depression that impacted the mountain west.
In the series, Randolph’s character, Elizabeth, is engaged to Jack Dutton. Although she comes from a family with ranching roots and has attended school in New York, she struggles to adapt to ranch life. A significant part of her arc revolves around her determination to learn the responsibilities of ranch management and endure the hardships that accompany this change. Despite the challenges she faces, including the death of her father and her unborn child, Elizabeth proves to be resilient and spirited.
Randolph’s experience in 1923 parallels her character’s growth in Landman. Both Ainsley and Elizabeth undergo transformative journeys, shifting from innocence and naivety toward a deeper understanding of their circumstances and the resilience needed to thrive in difficult environments.
Michelle Randolph and Taylor Sheridan Work Well Together
Randolph’s breakout role in Season 1 of 1923 led to her involvement in Landman, thanks to Sheridan’s invitation to audition for the role. Despite her excitement, Randolph didn’t anticipate participating in Landman since she was initially scheduled for filming 1923’s second season. However, it is common for Sheridan to collaborate with familiar faces across different projects.
As she returns for the new season, Randolph has expressed her enthusiasm about reuniting with Sheridan. In an interview with CBR, she shared:
“I’m just happy to be working with Taylor Sheridan again. I had the best experience [on] Season 1 of 1923 and then Landman, which is entirely separate, was equally as fun. And then Season 2 of 1923, it’s like a zigzag. But what’s nice about working with [Taylor] is it feels like a family. He does reuse a lot of actors and crew members.”
What Will ‘1923’ Season 2 Be About?
Given how Season 1 of 1923 concluded, the battle for the ranch will likely be the focal point of Season 2. The official trailer released by Paramount+ corroborates that the Dutton family’s struggle to retain their land will be central to the plot. The finale saw Whitfield settling a backlogged tax bill on the Dutton’s estate, with significant ramifications if the Duttons are unable to repay him.
Additionally, the trailer suggests that Spencer’s perilous journey back home will feature prominently in the upcoming season. Having traveled from Africa, Spencer finds himself facing substantial challenges, especially following his separation from Alexandra. As depicted in the trailer, Spencer is acutely aware that time is not on his side, and Alexandra seems to be in jeopardy after a distressing encounter with an unknown assailant.
As for Elizabeth, her character is anticipated to have a pivotal role in the upcoming season’s storyline. The narrative is likely to explore how Liz and Jack cope with the emotional aftermath of their loss, highlighting the physical and mental obstacles they encounter as they navigate their grief and personal growth.
Where Else Have You Seen Michelle Randolph?
Michelle Randolph first garnered attention in Sheridan’s 1923 and subsequently made her mark in Landman, solidifying her place in Sheridan’s cinematic universe. Before 1923, she had several acting credits, beginning with her role as Rachel in the 2017 horror film House of the Witch, directed by Alex Merkin. Interestingly, in this indie horror film, she also shared a romantic storyline with her future 1923 co-star Darren Mann.
Randolph went on to take supporting roles in other films such as A Snow White Christmas (2018), 5 Years Apart (2019), and The Resort (2021). After her stint in 1923, she portrayed the character Shea in the 2023 comedy The Throwback. Nevertheless, her most recognized performances to date are in Taylor Sheridan’s projects, where she has become a beloved figure among fans of both 1923 and Landman. The series 1923 is currently available for streaming on Paramount+ alongside Landman.
