Large Steam Plume Observed at Alaska’s Mount Spurr, Indicating Potential Eruption Soon

A significant steam plume has been observed coming from Mount Spurr in Alaska, indicating heightened volcanic activity. The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) released images on March 28, showcasing visible steam and gas emissions from both the summit and a northern vent of the volcano. Situated approximately 80 miles west of Anchorage, Mount Spurr rises to 11,070 feet. Experts warn that an eruption may occur in the upcoming weeks or months, although no definitive timeline is established at this point.

Indicators of Increased Volcanic Activity

In a recent report, the Alaska Volcano Observatory indicated that steam was detected rising from the summit on March 26. Additionally, a smaller plume was recorded from a fumarole located on the volcano’s northern flank. The AVO noted that there were no immediate changes in seismic activity or gas levels during these observations.

Earlier, in a March 11 update, the AVO highlighted a significant increase in gas emissions, suggesting that fresh magma has been moving into the crust beneath Mount Spurr. This development has prompted scientists to evaluate the potential for a near-term eruption. However, the AVO emphasized that predicting the exact timing of any eruption remains uncertain.

Potential Risks and Preparedness Measures

The observatory has indicated that the volcano’s alert level may be elevated if there are additional signs of escalating activity. Possible indicators include continuous seismic tremors, heightened gas emissions, or notable changes to the volcanic surface. Should an eruption take place, hazards could include ash clouds affecting air travel, ashfall in surrounding regions, as well as pyroclastic flows and lahars (mudflows).

Mount Spurr last erupted in 1992, an event that led to substantial ashfall and disrupted air travel in the surrounding area. The AVO urges both residents and visitors to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols should any alerts be issued.
