In October 2022, following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, major changes ensued, culminating in a rebranding of the platform to X.
As part of this significant rebranding effort, Twitter’s iconic bird logos were removed from its headquarters in San Francisco, with many pieces auctioned off in 2023.
Details about the fate of these notable items remained scarce until recently, when the details of the massive sign were disclosed.
550lb Twitter bird logo sells for $35,000
A report from Kron 4, a news outlet in San Francisco, confirms that the 550lb Twitter bird logo sign has fetched nearly $35,000 at auction.
The sign was initially obtained by RR Auctions during Twitter’s auction event in 2023, where it remained in storage until its recent sale. A spokesperson emphasized that the sign represents a pivotal moment in social media history, rather than just serving as a decorative piece.
They noted, “This Twitter sign is more than memorabilia: it stands as a testament to the rapid changes in our world. Acquiring it means securing a piece of the transformative era that redefined global communication.”
RR Auctions even shared a video showcasing the sign while it was still affixed to the building, where it had been prominently displayed from 2012 until its removal in 2023.
The auction also featured other significant tech memorabilia. Two checks signed by Apple’s co-founder Steve Jobs brought in $112,000 and $62,000, while an original Apple-1 computer sold for an incredible $375,000, and a sealed first-generation iPhone fetched $87,000.
