Kyle Larson Secures Another Shot at the Indianapolis 500
In a significant development announced at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Kyle Larson is set to compete again in the Indianapolis 500, joining Arrow McLaren’s roster for the prestigious race. This announcement, made jointly by Arrow McLaren and Hendrick Motorsports, marks an exciting continuation of Larson’s efforts in IndyCar racing.
The 32-year-old from California is expected to bolster Arrow McLaren’s lineup alongside talented drivers Pato O’Ward, Nolan Siegel, and newcomer Christian Lundgaard, who will be taking over from Alexander Rossi next season. With this announcement, Larson will be an essential part of a four-car team aiming for victory at one of motorsport’s biggest events.
Larson’s first experience attempting “The Double”—competing in both the Indianapolis 500 and the 600-mile NASCAR Cup Series event at Charlotte Motor Speedway—occurred on Memorial Day weekend. While he made a notable impression by qualifying fifth and setting a rookie qualifying record at an impressive speed of 233.543 mph, a pit lane speeding penalty ultimately limited his performance, causing him to finish in 18th place. Despite the setbacks, he earned the title of Rookie of the Year for the Indy 500. Unfortunately, rainy conditions hindered his ability to participate in the Coca-Cola 600 following the Indy 500.
Expressing his thoughts, Larson stated, “I really enjoyed the month of May in Indy and racing with Arrow McLaren, but I was really disappointed with missing the Coca-Cola 600 with the No. 5 HendrickCars.com team.” He further noted, “I appreciate the second opportunity because we have unfinished business. I really want to complete all 1100 miles, and I think we have the opportunity to battle for the win in both events.”
For the 2025 season, Larson will pilot the No. 17 car once again, carrying the HendrickCars.com sponsorship as part of a collective initiative dubbed #Hendrick1100. This solidifies the partnership between Larson, Hendrick Motorsports, and Arrow McLaren, aiming to enhance their competitive performance together.
Rick Hendrick, the team owner, praised Larson’s potential, stating, “Kyle had a great month of May and showed what a gifted race car driver he is.” He also highlighted the return on investment for HendrickCars.com, evidencing the substantial promotional benefits stemming from Larson’s initial Indy 500 experience. “It was a monumental effort by all involved, but we didn’t have the opportunity to see it through (because of inclement weather). Now that we’ve experienced it once, we know what to expect, which can only make us better and more prepared.”
In the realm of motorsports, Larson stands as one of only five drivers to attempt both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600, joining the ranks of Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon among those who have pursued this double challenge multiple times. Yet, none have managed to secure victories in either race, with Stewart being the only one to have completed all laps during his attempts.
Zak Brown, the CEO of McLaren Racing, expressed enthusiasm for Larson’s potential, saying, “Kyle showed us all what he was capable of this past May, and given a second chance with better weather conditions, I think we’ll all be excited to see him fight for a win at the Indy 500 and then another one in Charlotte.” He emphasized Larson’s immense talent, underscoring the privilege of collaborating with Hendrick and Jeff Gordon, both renowned figures in the racing world. “We can’t wait for May,” Brown concluded.
