LaTanya Richardson Jackson Returns to Broadway in “Purpose”

LaTanya Richardson Jackson is making her mark on Broadway once again, starring in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’s impactful new play, “Purpose.” During a recent appearance on the Sherri show, Jackson shared her insights about her role and the production’s creative process.

In her conversation, Jackson commended both Jacobs-Jenkins, the playwright, and director Phylicia Rashad for their ability to adapt and refine the play during its preview phase. Despite the challenge of integrating new lines into the performance, Jackson felt that this dynamism contributed positively to the overall experience. In “Purpose,” she portrays Claudine Jasper, the matriarch of a family deeply engaged in civil rights issues.

“Claudine is married to a prominent civil rights figure, and her journey revolves around raising their two sons while striving to keep the family unit intact,” Jackson articulated. “She manages the home front while her husband works on his legacy, both for the nation and their family.” This portrayal emphasizes the intricate balance of family dynamics and societal responsibilities.

Discussing the interaction with the audience, Jackson noted, “You can sense the audience’s energy, but it’s crucial not to let that influence your performance. You must stay focused on delivering the show.” She added that while the audience’s response enhances the experience, the essence of the performance lies in staying committed to the narrative. “Branden has created an extraordinary exploration of life that leaves you feeling fulfilled by the conclusion,” she stated.

Additionally, Jackson reflected on her experience directing her husband, Samuel L. Jackson, in the 2022 revival of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson.” With a touch of humor, she mentioned the occasional challenges in their working relationship, saying, “He sometimes struggles to take my direction because, well, he thinks he knows everything!”

LaTanya Richardson Jackson is celebrated for her extensive career as a stage and screen actress, director, and producer, being a two-time Tony Award nominee. Her notable Broadway performances include “Lena Younger” in the 2014 revival of Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun,” “Calpurnia” in Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of “To Kill A Mockingbird,” and “Bertha Holly” in the 2009 revival of August Wilson’s “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.” Currently, she captivates audiences as Claudine Jasper in “Purpose.”

The play revolves around the storied Jasper family, who have long been influential figures in Black American politics—serving as civil rights leaders, pastors, and congressmen. However, beneath their storied legacy, the family grapples with internal tensions and hidden truths. The narrative takes a turn when the youngest son, Nazareth, returns home accompanied by an unexpected guest, prompting a significant introspection regarding their faith and the weight of familial and political legacies.
