During the semifinal round of the 2025 Esso Cup in Lloydminster, Sask., Saskatoon AAA Stars forward Mikayla Broadfoot made a decisive impact, capping her performance with a critical goal. With just 5:34 left in the third period, Broadfoot unleashed a powerful wrist shot, securing a 3-2 victory over the North York Storm and propelling the Stars to their second-ever appearance in the Esso Cup gold medal game.
The Stars initiated the scoring with a power play goal in the first period, as Broadfoot netted her fifth goal of the tournament, giving Saskatoon a 1-0 advantage. This lead was held into the second period, showcasing the Stars’ strong start.
However, the tide turned when North York struck back with two quick goals from Lily Paisley and Demi Lazarou, taking a 2-1 lead by the end of the second period.
In a determined comeback, Saskatoon leveled the score early in the third period, equalizing at 2-2 with just under 17 minutes remaining. Broadfoot’s game-winner came shortly after, demonstrating her ability to perform under pressure.
Stars goaltender Tarynn Suter also played a pivotal role in the match, delivering a standout performance by stopping 22 of the 24 shots she faced, greatly contributing to the team’s success.
Throughout its history, the Stars have sought an Esso Cup title, previously finishing with silver in 2018 and bronze in 2015. They will have an opportunity to achieve their championship goal in the final scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m., where they will face either the host Steelers or the Edmonton Junior Oilers.
