Liam Lawson Finds Confidence Returning to Racing Bulls at Suzuka
Liam Lawson expressed satisfaction with his return to the Racing Bulls team during the Suzuka race weekend, despite recently facing a challenging demotion from Red Bull. He has quickly adapted to the significantly different dynamics of the VCARB 02, which has allowed him to regain comfort behind the wheel.
Following a couple of tough outings, Lawson’s tenure at Red Bull was brought to an abrupt end as the team’s management decided to replace him with former teammate Yuki Tsunoda. Lawson had been attempting to acclimate himself to the intricacies of the challenging RB21 car but didn’t receive the extended opportunity he required to do so. In contrast, his performance at Racing Bulls has seen him reach a commendable fifth place during a somewhat disjointed FP2 session at Suzuka, finishing just a fraction behind teammate Isack Hadjar.
“It felt good. It is definitely a different feeling to drive,” Lawson remarked about his initial experience in the VCARB 02. “The window that the guys have at the moment is very, very good. The car has been fast throughout the season, so hopefully, we can replicate that tomorrow as well.” He added his excitement about Suzuka’s new pavement, which he feels enhances the track’s already intense experience, saying, “Sector one is even faster now—it feels like it’s tearing your head off, which is quite thrilling.”
At Racing Bulls, Lawson has found an encouraging atmosphere that is crucial for rebuilding his confidence. Team principal Laurent Mekies emphasized the importance of supporting Lawson as he navigates this transitional phase. “He knows he has an important role to play with us in the battle we have in the midfield,” Mekies stated. “He knows he has a point to prove out there. We’re all aware of his talent and it’s about creating the right circumstances to help him bring that to the forefront.”
Lawson highlighted the positive environment he’s encountered since joining Racing Bulls, crediting the team for their supportive approach. “It’s been nice. Everybody’s been very, very positive, even from last week,” he said. He noted that Mekies reached out immediately with words of encouragement and that his visits to the team’s factory and paddock have contributed to a warm reception. “I’ve spent a lot of time with this team; they’re a great bunch of people. It’s reassuring to feel welcomed back again, so I hope we can have some successful races together.”
As Lawson settles back into this new setting, the focus remains on harnessing his potential and contributing to Racing Bulls’ campaign in a tightly contested midfield. The upcoming race will not only be a test of speed but also an opportunity for Lawson to further establish his position within the team.
