Clyburn Defends Harris: Acknowledges Talent and Campaign Missteps
During a recent interview, Representative James Clyburn, a prominent Democrat from South Carolina, expressed his belief that former Vice President Kamala Harris is a remarkable candidate who faced significant challenges from her campaign team. Clyburn’s remarks came in response to a New York Times report that indicated Harris is contemplating a presidential run in the future or possibly entering the 2026 race for California governor.
While Clyburn refrained from offering specific advice on Harris’s future political ambitions, he did commend her abilities, stating that she is a “tremendous talent” who was unfortunately let down by her campaign staff during her presidential bid. “I think she ran a great campaign,” he asserted, highlighting the disconnect between her potential and the strategies deployed by her advisors.
Clyburn’s Insights on Campaign Strategy
Clyburn emphasized that he had insights into the electoral landscape that were overlooked, suggesting that the campaign could have benefited from greater input from experienced individuals. He mentioned other figures, including former President Bill Clinton, who had relevant experiences and advice that went unheeded. “Listen to yours truly, when I was going around these rural communities, I knew what we needed to do and was not doing it,” he recalled.
“She was a great candidate, and I think she will make a great candidate in the future, whatever she decides to run for,” Clyburn concluded without indicating whether she should announce another candidacy.
As of now, Harris’s office has not commented on Clyburn’s statements or the ongoing speculation about her political future.
Harris’s Reaction to Election Defeat
Reports following the contentious election reveal that Kamala Harris was reportedly taken aback by her loss. In the book “Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House,” authored by journalists Amie Parnes and Jonathan Allen, it is suggested that Harris believed she would emerge victorious. During a discussion on the podcast “Somebody’s Gotta Win with Tara Palmeri,” Parnes remarked, “She was completely shocked,” underscoring how out of touch the campaign’s internal confidence was compared to the final results.
According to the authors, Harris’s campaign team felt misled by their leadership, who portrayed a more optimistic view of her chances despite the outcome. Following the defeat, Harris reportedly confided to friends that she felt a stronger showing could have been possible with a different timeline for the election or had she entered the race earlier.
“She could have won, she told friends, if only the election was later in the calendar — or she got in earlier. In other words, Joe Biden was to blame,” the book states, illustrating the complex emotions and thoughts swirling within the aftermath of her campaign.
