Abigail Joselyn, who identifies as an “extrovert,” reflects on a significant change in her life trajectory that transformed her approach to solitude and personal growth. Aged 26, Joselyn made the bold decision to leave her stable career in accounting, purchase a van, and embark on a journey across the United States. Despite the loneliness that accompanied this lifestyle over the past two years, she remains steadfast in her belief that the experience has helped her develop resilience and strength. Her story is a testament to the power of stepping outside one’s comfort zone, as shared in her conversation with Julia Sullivan, the director of associate health conditions.
After obtaining her master’s degree in 2021, Joselyn quickly secured her CPA and found employment at a prestigious accounting firm in Lakeland, Florida—a member of “The Big Four.” Although she excelled at her job and took pride in her accomplishments, the demands of her role became overwhelming. Long hours drained her enthusiasm, leading to a stark contrast between her professional persona and her true self. A poignant moment came when her mother remarked, “When you’re not working, you’re a completely different person,” highlighting the disconnect Joselyn felt.
In the midst of her corporate grind, Joselyn sought escape on long weekends, seeking solace in short getaways. It was during one such trip with a friend that the concept of “van life” surfaced—an idea that resonated deeply as they discussed nomadic living and the adventures that accompany it. Although they followed enthusiastic van lifers on social media, it hadn’t occurred to her before this discussion that she, too, could embrace such a lifestyle. Ironically, she had never even experienced camping or ventured out solo.
Once back home, the allure of van life captivated Joselyn’s thoughts. Her impulsive nature nudged her to contemplate the possibilities. She approached her parents with a proposal: to purchase and customize a van while negotiating the potential for remote work with her employer. Initially, they were skeptical, especially her father, who viewed this ambition as a fleeting whim. They questioned why she would jeopardize what many perceive as a desirable career path. However, Joselyn recognized that her current state was unsustainable; she craved change.
Approximately two months after her initial inspiration, Joselyn began exploring various vehicles and soon felt a surge of excitement. This idea started to materialize into reality. While her parents were still uncertain, their support became evident when she secured a van and embarked on customizing her new home on wheels. Her company surprisingly agreed to her working remotely, but she quickly realized that to fully embrace this new lifestyle, she would need to lighten her professional workload. After saving some money and with aspirations to grow her social media presence, she made the life-changing decision to leave her job and dedicate at least a year to the road.
The journey commenced with her mother accompanying her for the first 16 days, stretching from Asheville, North Carolina, to the picturesque California coast. Together, they treasured the trip, which felt surreal due to their shared experience. However, when her mother departed, Joselyn faced a wave of emotions, crying throughout the day. The solitude set in as she parked her van on a beach in California, realizing that this was her home now—and she wouldn’t be returning to her previous life.
