Earlier this year, the Hayes Theatre played host to a significant event in the world of theater. It marked the Broadway debut of Leslye Headland, a seasoned playwright and screenwriter, with her new play, Cult of Love. This expansive ensemble production boasted an impressive cast that included renowned stage actors such as Zachary Quinto, Mare Winningham, and David Rasche, alongside notable talents like Shailene Woodley, Barbie Ferreira, Christopher Lowell, Molly Bernard, Roberta Colindrez, Rebecca Henderson, and Christopher Sears.
Reflecting on the experience, Headland shared her feelings during a conversation with BroadwayWorld’s Richard Ridge. “Sitting in the audience on opening night and observing the performance through its run with Trip Cullman was something special; I couldn’t help but think, ‘This has come so far and it is exactly what I wanted it to be,'” she remarked. “This was the culmination of everything that I ever wanted for [this play].”
The narrative of Cult of Love unfolds during the holiday season, centering on the Dahl family, whose four adult children return to their childhood home along with their partners. The family’s cherished traditions include spontaneously breaking into harmonious carols. However, this gathering is fraught with tension as past grievances resurface, conflicts arise, and the holiday dinner takes an excruciatingly long time to serve. The family’s love for one another is put to the test as they navigate these challenges—will it be enough to ensure they can celebrate another Christmas together?
The play’s journey is far from over, as plans are underway to adapt it into a film. “We’ve been discussing how to expand the story. How can we remain true to the characters while shifting the setting? What strategies can we employ to advance the plot in ways that the play does not require, given that we will now be showcasing what’s happening visually?” Headland elaborated.
