Cult of Love is set to transition from stage to screen. The acclaimed play by Leslye Headland, which debuted on Broadway in December 2024, has been greenlit for a film adaptation produced by Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum’s Gloria Sanchez Productions, as reported by Deadline. The film is currently in its developmental phase, with Headland tapped to write the screenplay and handle the directorial duties. Specific details regarding casting and production timelines remain undisclosed.

In a conversation with Variety earlier this year, Headland revealed her plans for the screen adaptation, emphasizing her collaboration with cinematographer Chris Teague to explore visual storytelling elements rather than strictly relying on text. She pointed out the unique challenge of incorporating music into the film’s narrative, particularly diegetic music, which adds depth to the viewing experience.

Headland has a solid track record in directing, having previously worked on films like Bachelorette (2012) and Sleeping with Other People (2015). Her recent endeavor includes serving as the creator and showrunner for the Star Wars series The Acolyte, enhancing her credentials in the industry.

Leslye Headland’s Cult of Love made its debut at the Helen Hayes Theater in December 2024 and concluded its run in February. The production, directed by Trip Cullman, featured a notable cast including Shailene Woodley, Zachary Quinto, Barbie Ferreira, and Mare Winningham, among others. Reviews of the theatrical performance highlighted its impactful storytelling.

The narrative of Cult of Love revolves around the Dahl family during the holiday season, as four adult siblings return to their childhood home, now accompanied by their partners. Familiar traditions, such as spontaneous carol singing, clash with underlying tensions as past grievances rise to the surface, and various challenges test the familial bonds. The question remains whether their love will prevail or if it risks being their final Christmas celebration together.
