Spanning more than 65 years, Clint Eastwood has become a towering figure in Hollywood, celebrated for numerous cinematic classics. Even at the age of 94, he continues to captivate audiences with his performances. Eastwood’s notable portrayal of complex characters began with the iconic antihero cop, Harry Callahan, in the Dirty Harry film series, starting in 1971. This role became synonymous with his career and would see him reprise it multiple times throughout the following years.

In 1988, Eastwood returned to this notable character alongside fellow actor Liam Neeson in The Dead Pool, where Inspector Callahan faces a deadly game involving a list of celebrities predicted to die, which unsettlingly includes his own name. Despite mixed reviews and modest box office performance, the film captured the attention of critiques including the renowned Roger Ebert, who appreciated its craftsmanship.

Clint Eastwood and Liam Neeson Square-off on Screen in ‘The Dead Pool’

Release Date: July 13, 1988

Runtime: 91 Minutes

Writers: Harry Julian Fink, Rita M. Fink, Steve Sharon, Durk Pearson, Sandy Shaw

In The Dead Pool, Eastwood’s Harry Callahan is drawn back into action when he discovers the existence of a sinister betting scheme that predicts the deaths of San Francisco’s famous personalities. Among those involved is Neeson’s character, horror film director Peter Swan, who orchestrates the chilling contest that entices a disturbed serial killer. As the fate of themselves and others hang in the balance, Callahan partners with TV reporter Samantha Walker, played by Patricia Clarkson, to unmask the killer while navigating a city gripped by fear.

Eastwood’s Swan Song Attracts Ebert’s Praise

First stepping into the shoes of Inspector Callahan in Dirty Harry, Eastwood’s portrayal established him as a lawman who operates outside conventional boundaries to obtain justice. The Dead Pool made its debut on July 13, 1988, and achieved a notable box office return of approximately $37.9 million against its budget of $20-$30 million. Reflecting on revisiting the character, Eastwood remarked:

“It’s fun, once in a while, to have a character you can go back to. It’s like revisiting an old friend you haven’t seen for a long time. You figure ‘I’ll go back and see how he feels about things now.’

Despite receiving lukewarm critiques, with some considering it a weaker installment in the franchise, Ebert rated the film positively, awarding it 3.5 out of 4 stars and suggesting that it held its own alongside the original. He noted:

“The film is smart, quick, and made with real wit. It’s never just a crude action movie, bludgeoning us with violence. It’s self-aware, it knows who Dirty Harry is and how we react to him, and it has fun with its intelligence.”

Beyond serving as Eastwood’s farewell to the character, The Dead Pool also marked Liam Neeson’s foray into the action genre, setting the stage for his future as an action star. Although his breakthrough would come later with Taken, Neeson’s portrayal of Swan showcased his ability to hold his ground against Eastwood’s formidable presence.

Taken became a career-defining moment for Neeson, leading to numerous successful action films such as The Grey, A Walk Among the Tombstones, and In the Land of Saints and Sinners. Neeson remains active in the industry, with several anticipated projects on the horizon, including the action comedy The Naked Gun and thrilling productions like Cold Storage and Hotel Tehran.
