Lil Wayne has declared that he will never perform at the Super Bowl, following his disappointment over not being selected for the halftime show at Super Bowl LIX in his hometown of New Orleans. In a candid interview with Rolling Stone, he expressed his frustration, stating, “They stole that feeling. I don’t want to do it. It was perfect.”

For Wayne, the opportunity to take the Super Bowl stage had always been a dream, especially if it were to occur in his own city. He had previously conveyed this desire in a 2023 interview with the same publication. When Kendrick Lamar was announced as the performer for the upcoming show, Wayne shared in a video that being overlooked had profoundly affected him, saying it “broke” him.

In his recent comments, Wayne recounted his attempts to land the halftime performance, recounting that someone from the NFL suggested he engage more publicly in the lead-up to the event. “To perform, it’s a bunch of things they’re going to tell you to do and not do, asses to kiss and not kiss,” he explained. Wayne revealed that he participated in high-profile events, including Michael Rubin’s exclusive parties and collaborations with Tom Brady, which he typically would not consider. “You ain’t never seen me in them types of venues. I ain’t Drake. I ain’t out there smiling like that everywhere. I’m in the studio, smoking and recording,” he added.

These conversations led Wayne to believe he was a strong contender for the Super Bowl performance. However, when Kendrick Lamar was officially announced, Wayne received an apology from an NFL representative who mentioned, “We ain’t in charge” of the halftime show.

“All of a sudden, according to them, they got curved,” Wayne said, reflecting on the situation. “So, I’m going to have to just settle with whatever they say.”

Despite the disappointment, Wayne maintained that he has no hard feelings towards Jay-Z, who along with Roc Nation has been managing the Super Bowl halftime show for several years. However, both Jay-Z and the NFL have not commented on the matter publicly.

Wayne also mentioned that he reached out to Lamar prior to the Super Bowl to express his support. However, during the event itself, Wayne opted not to watch the halftime performance. Instead, he chose to spend the time playing pool with his friend and fellow rapper, Lil Twist, before stepping outside to smoke. “Every time I looked,” he remarked regarding Lamar’s show, “it was nothing that made me want to go inside and see what was going on.”
