Lily-Rose Depp Reflects on Childhood Trauma from Father’s Iconic Role
Lily-Rose Depp is navigating her own Hollywood path while still grappling with childhood memories of her father Johnny Depp, particularly his role in the beloved ’90s film “Edward Scissorhands.” The actress, who is currently starring in the supernatural remake “Nosferatu,” shared insights into the emotional impact that movie had on her during her formative years.
Released in 1990 and directed by Tim Burton, “Edward Scissorhands” tells the story of a gentle, unfinished creature named Edward, portrayed by Johnny Depp, who struggles to fit into suburban life due to his scissor-like hands. Despite the film’s overarching theme of acceptance and love, Lily-Rose recalled feeling “traumatized” by the way the characters treated her father’s character.
Childhood Impressions
“I was traumatized by it,” Lily-Rose admitted during an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. “Not because I thought he was scary, but because everyone was being so mean to him, and I got really upset. I remember being petrified by that, which is weird, because I don’t have many memories from when I was that young.”
She further expressed a complex relationship with the characters, indicating that her empathy extends even to the vampires in horror narratives: “Edward’s the good guy and Nosferatu’s kind of the bad guy, but there’s a part of me that feels a little bit of empathy for Nosferatu. Am I sick for feeling that way?”
Lily-Rose is playing the role of Ellen Hutter in “Nosferatu,” a project helmed by Robert Eggers that draws inspiration from Bram Stoker’s iconic novel “Dracula.” In this film, her character has a psychic bond with the vampire, adding depth to her portrayal and allowing her to explore darker themes.
Exploring Identity and Privacy
When discussing her father’s collaboration with Burton in the realm of supernatural tales, she noted a certain comfort found within goth culture. “Sure, I guess you could say so,” she reflected. “We’re very different actors, but, of course, you’re the product of your environment, and it’s a world I’ve always been very interested in.”
Though she carries the legacy of her famous parents—Johnny Depp and French model Vanessa Paradis—Lily-Rose has been vocal about her desire to carve her own identity in the entertainment world. “Every job comes with a set of circumstances, and this [fame] is kind of one of them,” she remarked in an interview with the Daily Telegraph. “The importance to me has been to maintain a sense of privacy and groundedness.”
She explained that actors must protect their personal lives to engage deeply with their characters, saying, “It’s important to protect a sense of anonymity. They’re not supposed to get to know ‘you’ that well, because you want them to believe you as other characters.”
On the ‘Nepo Baby’ Debate
Lily-Rose has also addressed the ongoing discussion surrounding “nepo babies,” or children of celebrities who find success in the industry. “The internet seems to care a lot about that kind of stuff,” she stated. “People are going to have preconceived ideas about you or how you got there, and I can definitely say that nothing is going to get you the part except for being right for the part.” She emphasized that familial connections might open doors, but talent and hard work are crucial for sustaining a career.
As she continues to challenge traditional perceptions and carve her place in Hollywood, Lily-Rose Depp remains committed to her craft, taking on diverse roles that allow her to explore complex characters and narratives.
