Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to embark on an exciting new project, as revealed in an interview with Jennifer Mercedes of ChicaDeportes. The Tony Award-winning creator is working on a film centered around the famous Molina brothers, renowned baseball players from Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, the hometown of Miranda’s father.
“Vega Alta has produced an astonishing number of Major League Baseball players, beyond just the Molina brothers, including Bernie Williams,” Miranda noted. “It’s remarkable, and we’re actively pursuing a way to honor that through film.”
While Miranda did not clarify his specific role in the project, he emphasized the significance of highlighting Latino voices within both Hollywood and Broadway. “Each time I engage with my craft—whether at the piano or on stage—I aim to uplift our stories and create meaningful roles for Latino performers,” he stated. If he does assume directorial responsibilities for this film, it would mark his second feature after the acclaimed 2021 release, Tick, Tick…Boom!
The Molina brothers—Bengie, José, and Yadier—made their names as Major League Baseball catchers and later transitioned into coaching and managerial roles. Throughout their sports careers, they played for various teams, including the Anaheim Angels, New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, and St. Louis Cardinals. Notably, all three brothers secured World Series championships, achieving a milestone as the first trio of siblings to do so.
Miranda is widely recognized for his contributions to Broadway, including hit musicals like In the Heights and Hamilton, as well as crafting soundtracks for animated films such as Moana, Vivo, and Encanto. His Broadway accolades also encompass New York, New York (where he contributed additional lyrics, leading to a Tony nomination for Best Musical), Freestyle Love Supreme (Co-Founder, Guest Star, Special Tony Award Recipient), Bring It On: The Musical (co-composer/co-lyricist), and West Side Story (2009 revival, where he provided Spanish translations).
Among his numerous honors, Miranda has received a Pulitzer Prize, three Tony Awards, two Laurence Olivier Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and five Grammy Awards, in addition to nominations for two Academy Awards. He was also recognized with the Kennedy Center Honors in 2018. Recently, in 2024, he released a concept album titled Warriors, which he collaborated on with Eisa Davis, and is currently developing a stage adaptation of the work.
