In 2003’s Freaky Friday, a mystical fortune cookie catalyzed a body-switching adventure for Anna and Tess. Fast forward to today, and Lindsay Lohan is making her own comeback without any magical assists, starring in the upcoming sequel, Freakier Friday. Lohan and her co-star Jamie Lee Curtis recently shared their journey toward this long-anticipated project in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Manifesting A Reunion
“It’s manifestation,” Lohan remarked, reflecting on the sequel. During the pandemic, she envisioned collaborating with Netflix and reuniting with Disney. Her aspirations came to fruition as she took on a lead role for the first time in 15 years, appearing in three Netflix films: 2022’s Falling for Christmas, along with two films slated for 2024, Irish Wish and Our Little Secret.
“I believed it would happen,” Lohan noted. “Things like these are meant to be, and I cherish these opportunities.”
Curtis played a vital role in this process as well. She recounted a pivotal moment during the promotional tour for 2022’s Halloween Ends, where inquiries about a Freaky Friday sequel prompted her to reach out to Lohan. Recognizing the enthusiasm from fans, she felt there was a genuine interest in revisiting their characters.
“When I called her, I was like, ‘Yes, count me in,’” Lohan shared, emphasizing the significance of collaborating with someone who has played such an important part in her life.
Making It Happen
Taking initiative is crucial in the manifestation process. Curtis previously divulged that she contacted the studio about the potential sequel after her promotional activities for Halloween Ends. “I reached out to my friends at Disney, expressing that it felt like there was a movie to make,” she told The New York Times as the original Freaky Friday celebrated its 20th anniversary.
At the time, the duo had not officially signed on for Freakier Friday, but both made their interest clear. “Jamie and I are both keen on that idea, so we’re leaving it to those who have the power to make it happen,” Lohan mentioned to The Times. “We would only create something that fans would genuinely love.”
In November, anticipation grew when Curtis shared a photo of the two of them on Instagram, teasing followers about switching roles again soon, especially after the end of a strike affecting the industry.
It took several more months for further confirmation, but in March 2024, Lohan announced the sequel was officially happening. During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, she expressed excitement, though she refrained from revealing too much.
Freakier Friday is set to hit theaters on August 8.
