Snoop Dogg has taken on a meaningful project with the release of Altar Call, a compilation that honors his late mother, Beverly Tate.
Death Row Records has ventured into the gospel genre with this new 21-track album, featuring prominent artists like Jamie Foxx and John P. Kee. This release is particularly poignant as it commemorates what would have been Beverly Tate’s 74th birthday; she passed away in 2021 at the age of 70.
Reflecting on the project, Snoop Dogg shared with Okayplayer, “The spirit of my mother will forever live within me. This album is a reflection of what she has taught me — to use my voice and my platform to spread love and heal the world. Just another chapter out of the Bible of Love.” As executive producer, Snoop aimed to seamlessly fuse gospel with elements from R&B, hip-hop, and beyond.

Snoop Dogg’s exploration of gospel music is not entirely new; he previously released Bible of Love in 2018. During an interview on Dr. Dre’s Beats 1 radio show, he expressed, “It’s always been on my heart. I just never got around to it… I need to do it now.” He emphasized the importance of creating music that promotes love and unity in today’s divided climate, saying, “I am blessed to have so many legendary friends join me on this journey. That’s what I was taught, so that’s all I know. Real love.”
The new album Altar Call features collaborations that showcase this mission, with Jamie Foxx delivering a tribute through his rendition of Bill Withers’ “Grandma’s Hands.” Other contributions include Death Row artists Charlie Breal and JANE HANDCOCK with their tracks “Grace and Mercy” and “Just Believe,” respectively.
