Liv and Mia Tyler Reflect on Their First Meeting and Family Dynamics

In a heartfelt exchange on the April 13 episode of the iHeart Radio podcast Sibling Revelry With Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, Liv Tyler, 47, and her younger half-sister Mia Tyler, 46, shared their poignant memories of their initial encounter. The sisters discovered they were related during a unique upbringing, with both having rock star Steven Tyler as their father, the renowned lead singer of Aerosmith.

Having spent their early years in New Hampshire and Maine, Liv and Mia recounted how they remained unaware of their sibling bond until they attended an Aerosmith concert together at the ages of eight and nine. Their mothers, Bebe Buell and Cyrinda Foxe, brought them to this memorable event, marking a turning point in their lives.

Mia reminisced about the concert atmosphere, saying, “I remember there were no kids backstage. So we played hard that night. And we were at this VIP area, outside of the green rooms, and we were just like, you know, doing our eight and nine-year-old thing, and this fan lady came up and she was like ‘oh my god, you girls are so cute. Are you guys sisters?’”

Liv elaborated on her complex childhood, explaining how she was partially raised by her grandparents in Maine during a turbulent period in Steven Tyler’s battle with sobriety. During these formative years, she was led to believe that Todd Rundgren, a musician who acted as a father figure, was her biological dad, as he had signed her birth certificate.

Reflecting on that fateful concert night, Liv revealed, “That night that she’s [Mia] talking about, Guns N’ Roses were opening for Aerosmith. It was during their performance of ‘Welcome to the Jungle.’ We had driven to the gig at a venue called Great Woods.” Her excitement palpable, Liv shared the moment vividly: “I was so excited because I loved Guns N’ Roses. And on the side of the stage was this girl standing there.”

Mia added a cherished memory about Axl Rose dedicating the song “Sweet Child O’ Mine” to her during tours, stating, “he’d like bring me out on stage and be like ‘this is again to you.’”

Liv recounted her feelings upon spotting a girl who mirrored her appearance: “I just remember standing there watching them play, looking and seeing this girl who looked exactly like me. We were both wearing the same outfit, had the same spiral perms, pink frosty lipstick, and Aerosmith concert shirts with black leggings and Reebok high top sneakers. I was literally like looking in the mirror.” This striking resemblance initiated a cascade of realizations for Liv.

Following the song, Liv vividly recalled her mother’s emotional response, saying, “I looked at my mom, and she just started crying. My mom was bawling, and I was like, ‘is Steven my dad?’ and she just burst. She took me to a bench and we sat on at an outdoor amphitheater, and she told me the whole story in the most sincere, beautiful way.”

As Liv began to build a relationship with her biological father and Mia, she also considered the emotional complexity of this revelation for Todd Rundgren, expressing that the situation might still be difficult for him. “I think it’s probably still very hard and painful and I don’t speak to him enough. I love him. I have brothers from him, and I had a whole family with them,” she reflected, highlighting her gratitude to Rundgren and their intertwined family history.

As the conversation unfolded, it stood as a touching revelation of love and familial ties amid a backdrop of rock ‘n’ roll legacy. Sibling Revelry continues to share the stories of sibling relationships, with new episodes available weekly on iHeartRadio.
