Livingston’s McGowan Reflects on Goals for Cup and Promotion
The pressing question for former St Johnstone defender McGowan and his Livingston teammates revolves around their priorities for the current season: is it the cup or the pathway to promotion that takes precedence?
In response, McGowan offers a sentiment that resonates with many in the sporting community: “You want to be successful in both those competitions.” He elaborates, stating that the team’s primary aim at the outset of the season was to secure promotion, either directly or through the play-offs, while also embarking on a rewarding cup journey.
McGowan expresses confidence in the squad’s depth by pointing out their ability to rotate players without significantly impacting performance: “We’ve got a really good squad, and we’ve seen in recent games that we were able to change personnel and not let our performances drop that much.” However, he also acknowledges the volatile nature of football, stating, “Things can change pretty quickly, though, and we’re only a couple of bad results away from losing everything as well.”
Livingston’s cup journey has thus far included victories over clubs like Brora Rangers, Premiership side Ross County, and Cove Rangers from League 1. Notably, the team’s 3-0 triumph against Cove was highlighted by a goal from McGowan, yet it was the impressive win against Ross County that fueled their self-belief.
As for the possibility of adding another winners’ medal to his collection, McGowan remains optimistic: “Let myself dream,” he says. “Maybe one more, one more shot. We’ll see how Monday goes.” The prospect of returning to Hampden for a semi-final and potentially reaching another final is a thrilling prospect for him.
With both cup aspirations and promotion hopes on the line, Livingston continues to forge ahead, driven by the ambition and resilience showcased by players like McGowan.
