[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for the 9-1-1: Lone Star series finale “Homecoming.”]
In the much-anticipated finale of 9-1-1: Lone Star, viewers can breathe a sigh of relief as no major character meets a tragic end, despite a moment that suggests otherwise for Owen, portrayed by Rob Lowe. However, the bittersweet reality is that the series has concluded its run.
The finale sees the heroic 126 team averting a nuclear disaster, after which a significant time leap of five months reveals pivotal developments in the characters’ lives: Owen relocates to New York, Tommy (Gina Torres) celebrates remission, Judd (Jim Parrack) ascends to captain, T.K. (Ronen Rubinstein) embraces fatherhood as a stay-at-home dad with partner Carlos (Rafael Silva) after adopting Jonah, Marjan (Natacha Karam) announces her pregnancy, and Mateo (Julian Works) enjoys expedited citizenship due to his dedication as a firefighter.
Co-showrunner Rashad Raisani shares insights on the finale, exploring potential future storylines that could have unfolded had the series continued. (For additional perspectives on Owen’s conclusion and the narrative’s overarching themes, see more here. Following this, look out for further discussions with Raisani in our First Response aftershow, which dissects the fates of Judd and Tommy.)
Completing Owen’s Journey
Can you share your thoughts on bringing Owen’s character full circle back to New York and the near-death experience?
Rashad Raisani: As we approached the series finale, there was a need to reflect on the show’s inception. Themes established early on, particularly Owen’s battle with cancer and T.K.’s struggle with addiction, played a pivotal role in shaping the concluding narrative. The 126 faced significant challenges in the beginning, and the series primarily emphasized healing. By the end, both Owen and T.K. have triumphed over their respective trials, prompting the question of what lies ahead for them. It’s important for viewers to feel a sense of hope rather than despair as the series concludes.
Given the emotional weight of the finale, the decision to avoid a tragic ending for Owen was intentional. While sadness may resonate with viewers, my objective was to provide a resolution that offered a semblance of peace as they watch the characters move forward into new chapters of their lives.
Adoption and New Beginnings for T.K. and Carlos
What led to the decision to close with T.K. and Carlos’s adoption story?
Several elements guided this narrative choice. T.K. and Carlos have endured profound challenges, particularly in recent seasons, and it was essential to highlight their well-deserved happiness and joy as they aspire to form a family. Additionally, the theme of sacrifice resonates deeply. T.K. had to make difficult choices reflecting his love and commitment to his family, showcasing an evolution in their relationship and individual journeys.
Marjan’s Journey and Future Challenges
Marjan’s pregnancy marks a significant development. Was there any hesitation in that decision?
Ending Marjan’s arc with her pregnancy was crucial to her character development, representing a shift in her vulnerability and strength. However, with the reduction of episodes this season, it challenged our narrative pacing. We aimed to encapsulate her growth throughout the series while acknowledging that we had to make choices quickly to fit her storyline.
Potential Alternate Endings and Future Directions
Did you explore any alternate endings for key characters?
An initial idea involved Owen’s death, which would have cast a shadow over the conclusion. However, after much consideration, it became evident that such an ending would overly weigh down the finale. We had also contemplated T.K. and Carlos moving to a new city for potential spinoff opportunities.
What Could Have Been in Season 6
If you had known earlier about a possible Season 6, how would the narrative have changed?
Had we been assured a continuation, we would have elaborated on the character arcs more fully and avoided a rapid time jump. Instead of concluding with a time leap of five months, we would have explored these developments in-depth and allowed the characters to navigate their journeys in more gradual and meaningful ways.
Unfulfilled Storylines and Opportunities Missed
Were there storylines that weren’t realized, particularly regarding Grace Ryder’s character?
Indeed, Grace’s character had significant potential, and her storyline was meant to address profound themes of faith and resilience. The trajectory we envisioned for her was intimately tied to Judd’s development this season.
The Future of 9-1-1: Lone Star
What are the chances for a revival of the series?
Though my heart longs for a revival, pragmatically, it appears unlikely. Despite the show’s positive reception and performance on platforms like Hulu, corporate decisions often dictate the fate of series, making a comeback challenging.
Is there a character you wish you had brought back for the finale?
Lisa Edelstein’s character Gwyn stands out as someone I would have loved to include again, as her presence left a significant impact on the series.
Lastly, was there a possibility for the introduction of Owen’s other ex-wife?
We explored that idea frequently, and while the potential existed, narrative directions ultimately shifted. We cherished the humor and depth that such a character could have provided.
Would character deaths have been considered if the series continued?
Absolutely, character deaths would have been part of the narrative landscape; however, the execution would have required ample time to flesh out the healing process that would follow.
9-1-1: Lone Star is available for streaming on Hulu.
