NEW YORK — Omer Neutra, a 21-year-old Israeli-American from Long Island, has been confirmed dead by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The announcement came on Monday, stating that Neutra lost his life in combat against Hamas militants during the violent events of October 7. His remains are currently held in Gaza by Hamas.

The Neutra family is experiencing profound grief and has requested that the public, which has shown significant support during this difficult time, respect their need for privacy until they are ready to discuss their next steps. A spokesperson for the family shared this sentiment in a statement on Monday.

After graduating high school, Neutra chose to defer his studies at SUNY Binghamton to enlist in the IDF, showing his commitment to serve. In response to the tragic news, New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences, stating, “We just learned that this prayer couldn’t be answered for the family of Omer Neutra. Omer was barbarically murdered by Hamas in the October 7 attacks. We pray that his body can be returned to his family, who have been speaking out for him and all hostages since that horrific day.”

In recognition of Neutra’s sacrifice, Joseph Saladino, Supervisor of the Town of Oyster Bay, announced that flags in the town would be flown at half-staff. His statement reflected a deep sadness over the loss, acknowledging Neutra as a cherished member of the community and an IDF soldier. He noted, “This heartbreaking news is a profound reminder of the immense sacrifices made by individuals who stand in service to protect and defend democracy around the world.” Saladino extended his thoughts and prayers to Neutra’s family, friends, and all who knew him, emphasizing the collective sorrow felt in the town.

Families of Hostages Respond to Hamas Propaganda Video

During a rally held in Central Park over the weekend, Neutra’s parents spoke out alongside other families affected by the hostage crisis. Among them was the father of Edan Alexander, a 20-year-old also taken hostage during the attacks, who grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey, and enlisted in the IDF after high school. Alexander was featured in a recent video released by Hamas, showing him alive, which elicited mixed feelings from his father, who described the experience as emotional yet disturbing. Nonetheless, he expressed relief at receiving confirmation that his son is still alive.

Currently, Israel reports that 97 hostages are still being held captive by Hamas. Families continue to advocate for their safe return and remain hopeful despite the challenges ahead.
