In an unexpected turn for her followers, New Zealand artist Lorde has officially released her new single, “What Was That,” just a day after teasing it with an in-person preview.

The announcement, made a mere 12 hours prior to the release, marks Lorde’s return to music following her 2021 album Solar Power. This new track, co-produced by Lorde, Jim-E Stack, and Dan Nigro, represents a shift away from her previous work, hinting instead at a nostalgic return to the themes explored in her critically acclaimed 2018 album, Melodrama.

“What Was That” premiered live on April 22 in New York City’s Washington Square Park. Initially, Lorde had invited her fans to join her for a special event, but this informal gathering was interrupted by local law enforcement due to concerns over proper permits for a concert.

Although it remains uncertain whether a concert was part of her original plans, the fans who remained in the park were treated to an unexpected appearance by Lorde. Expressing her gratitude, she chose not to perform live but instead danced to her new single as it played, courtesy of Dev Hynes from Blood Orange.

The performance was also featured in the newly released music video for “What Was That,” which showcases Lorde in various iconic locations throughout New York City.

Leading up to the release, Lorde engaged her fans through social media, sharing insights and voicemails that hinted at the changes ahead. “I just wanted to say hi, because everything is about to change,” she stated in one voice memo, expressing excitement while looking ahead to this new chapter. “These are the last moments where it’s just us, which is crazy. But so right. I’m so ready.”
