Matthew Stafford Returns, Ramps Up Rams’ Super Bowl Aspirations

The Los Angeles Rams have solidified their playoff ambitions with star quarterback Matthew Stafford committing to another season, following a tumultuous offseason. The prospect of the Rams pursuing a new franchise quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft has been alleviated, thanks to Stafford’s decision to stay put.

Holding the 26th pick in the first round of the draft, the Rams faced a period of uncertainty regarding Stafford’s future. This offseason echoed the tension of the previous year but concluded positively for both parties before the draft commenced.

After exploring trade options—authorized by his team—Stafford found no suitable fits and returned to the team that guided him to a Super Bowl 56 victory. This agreement essentially amounts to a one-year deal, reflecting Stafford’s desire for updated compensation consistent with his stature in the league.

Expressing contentment, Stafford shared, “There are so many positive things about our organization and about our team. I never really wanted to leave.”

Entering his 17th season—one that likely leads to Pro Football Hall of Fame induction—Stafford aimed to ensure his contract matched current market standards. Although he wasn’t a free agent, both sides acknowledged the necessity for an adjustment. Reports from Spotrac.com indicate that Stafford’s new deal will see him earn a $23 million base salary along with $16 million in bonuses.

“I’m just happy to be back and happy that the Rams want me back,” said Stafford. “We can move forward and hopefully have a great season.”

Last season, the Rams secured the NFC West title with a 10-7 record and presented a formidable challenge to the Philadelphia Eagles, the eventual Super Bowl champions, during a divisional playoff match. The experience underscored their potential for a deeper postseason run, largely thanks to Stafford, who delivered 20 touchdown passes against just eight interceptions throughout the regular season, often shining during pivotal moments.

Stafford’s return is crucial, especially considering the team’s lack of an adequate replacement on the roster. The free-agent market did not offer appealing prospects, and relying on a rookie quarterback to carry the team to the Super Bowl seemed unrealistic.

Despite contemplating alternatives, Stafford opted to remain with the Rams. He noted, “You’re doing due diligence and looking around. I’m a fan of the NFL. I know a lot of these coaches, a lot of the players, a lot of the teams and some of their situations. You poke your head around and see what’s going on.”

Ultimately, Stafford affirmed that his priority was to stay with the Rams, expressing satisfaction with how the situation unfolded. “Wanting to be back with the Rams was my No. 1 priority and glad that it worked out, so I don’t have to worry too much about it,” he concluded.
