Louisville Men’s Basketball Breaks Losing Streak, Faces Tough Road Ahead
The Louisville Cardinals managed to halt a three-game losing streak with a narrow victory over UTEP on Wednesday evening. However, the team is now preparing for a demanding sequence of matches that could challenge their momentum.
Head coach Pat Kelsey remains optimistic despite the tough conditions presented by the recent schedule, which included a challenging loss to Duke prior to the UTEP matchup and an upcoming rivalry game against Kentucky.
During the post-game press conference, Kelsey addressed the strains of the schedule while maintaining a lighthearted approach. “I mean, we get a bunch of free sneakers, I wear sweatsuits to work, my kids are healthy, my wife’s hot – I’ve got a pretty good life,” he remarked, prompting laughter from the gathered media.
Kelsey reflected on the joys of his profession, recalling his father’s perspective on work. “My dad used to say it all the time. I would say, ‘Hey dad, you got to go to work today?’ He would say, ‘Son, I get to go to work today.’” This statement embodies his enthusiasm and gratitude for coaching college basketball at a prestigious venue like the Yum Center.
Despite acknowledging the difficult stretch, Kelsey expressed pride in his team’s perseverance. “The schedule’s been a little bit difficult. We’ve had some adversity, but the guys have been awesome. The process has been great. The results will take care of themselves,” he said, highlighting his focus on growth and determination.
Terrence Edwards Jr. played a pivotal role in the UTEP game, contributing 22 points, a performance that helped the Cardinals secure the much-needed win before facing off against the fifth-ranked Kentucky team.
This season marks Kelsey’s inaugural campaign as head coach for Louisville. After taking over from Kenny Payne, who faced significant challenges in leading the team to a 12-52 record over two seasons, Kelsey aims to revitalize the program. Currently, the Cardinals hold a record of 6-4 under his leadership.
