Exploring the Revival of ‘Love Life’ at New York City Center
Step into the world of ‘Love Life’ as Kim Kowalke, President & CEO of the Kurt Weill Foundation, unveils the intriguing backstory of the renowned ‘Love Song.’ This event offers an exclusive first listen of the piece, performed by John Edwards, enhancing the anticipation surrounding the production. Don’t miss the opportunity to engage with the video presentation!
Taking the helm is Tony Award winner Victoria Clark, who directs this revival. The Guest Music Director, Rob Berman, will conduct the Encores! Orchestra, bringing new energy to the performance. Notably, ‘Love Life’ has not been staged in New York for more than 75 years, making this a significant event for fans of musical theater. Initially scheduled for the 2020 Encores! series, the production was halted due to the pandemic, making its return all the more awaited.
Brian Stokes Mitchell is reprising his role as Sam Cooper, joined by a talented cast that includes returning members from the 2020 lineup: Kate Baldwin as Susan Cooper, John Edwards as Hobo, Sara Jean Ford as Miss Ideal Man, and Clarke Thorell as Mr. Cynic. Joining them in the 2025 rendition are newcomers Andrea Rosa Guzman as Elizabeth Cooper and Christopher Jordan as Johnny Cooper. It is notable that Nicholas Christopher, who was previously cast as Sam, will not be able to participate due to scheduling conflicts.
‘Love Life’ stands out as a unique collaboration between composer Kurt Weill and lyricist Alan Jay Lerner. This 1948 musical is a rarely performed gem that chronicles a love story set against the backdrop of 200 years of American history. The narrative is experienced through the lens of a family that remains perpetually youthful, allowing for a profound exploration of the complexities of marriage. The show skillfully juxtaposes intimate moments with satirical vaudeville performances and is often heralded as the first concept musical, influencing later classics such as ‘Cabaret,’ ‘Chicago,’ and ‘Company.’
The Encores! production of ‘Love Life’ features innovative scenic design by Ryan Howell, costume design by Tracy Christensen, lighting by Paul Miller, sound design by Scott Lehrer, and hair and wig design by J. Jared Janas. Additionally, Skylar Fox will contribute illusions and magic, adding layers of excitement to the performance.
