Model Lucy Markovic, known for “Australia’s Next Top Model” and walking for Armani and Versace, died at 27 from a rare brain condition. Tributes poured in from the fashion world.

Lucy Markovic has sadly passed away.

The talented model, recognized for her participation in “Australia’s Next Top Model” and her runway appearances for major fashion houses such as Armani and Versace, died at the young age of 27. Her agency, Elite Model Management, shared the news through social media on Thursday, indicating that she had been fighting a rare brain condition. Shortly thereafter, Markovic’s official Instagram account posted a message confirming her passing, following a previous update that indicated she was “battling for her life.”

In their statement, Elite Model Management described Markovic as “a bright shining light,” and said, “Modeling was one of Lucy’s dreams, and we are deeply honored to have been part of that journey with her. She brought elegance, strength, and beauty to her work, but even more, she graced us with her warmth, laughter, and light.”

Markovic’s rise to fame began during her appearance on the ninth season of “Australia’s Next Top Model” in 2015, where she secured the runner-up position, finishing just behind Brittany Beattie.

Following the show, Markovic established a notable modeling career that included campaigns for renowned brands such as Versace and Victoria Beckham. She walked the runways for prestigious designers like Oscar de la Renta, Bulgari, Givenchy, and Dolce & Gabbana, and made her mark in acclaimed fashion publications, including Marie Claire and various international editions of Vogue.

Just three weeks prior to her death, Markovic shared on Instagram her plans for surgery to address a brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM)—a potentially dangerous tangle of blood vessels that can lead to severe complications including strokes. In her post, she revealed that the malformation was “the size of a golf ball” and shared her experiences with seizures over the past four years.

The post included her thoughts about the challenges she faced during her health struggles, accompanied by a photo from the hospital and a scan of her brain. “Full flood of emotions in this time,” she captioned the photo. “Life’s a journey and I’m ready for the next chapter.”

Following the news of her passing, numerous tributes streamed in from the fashion community. Among those paying their respects was Alex Consani, the newly crowned Model of the Year, who left heartfelt messages on Markovic’s Instagram page.

Donatella Versace, who is currently the chief brand ambassador for the Versace label, also took to social media to honor Markovic.

Versace expressed her sorrow, saying, “I am so sorry to hear the news about @lucymarkovicc. Rest in peace beautiful girl.” This tribute came shortly after she stepped down as chief creative officer of her family’s brand, a role she held for nearly three decades.

Markovic’s Australian agency, Kult Australia, conveyed their grief as well, stating, “Today, we lost a star… She was radiant, warm, and a beautiful soul.”
