Luigi Mangione, the alleged perpetrator in the homicide of UnitedHealth Group’s CEO Brian Thompson, was present in Manhattan Supreme Court on February 21, 2025, facing serious charges of murder and terrorism.
In a recent court appearance, Mangione entered a plea of not guilty to the federal charges related to the murder of Thompson, who was tragically shot on the streets of Manhattan in December.
Should he be convicted, the 26-year-old former University of Pennsylvania student could face the death penalty in this high-profile case. In addition to federal charges, he is also implicated in state court for the same crime.
The incident occurred on December 4, when Mangione allegedly shot Thompson as the CEO approached the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan, where UnitedHealth Group was hosting an investor event.
Law enforcement apprehended Mangione five days after the incident at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
In the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, he faces charges including murder by firearm, two counts of stalking, and an additional firearms violation.
During the hearing, conducted before Judge Margaret Garnett, the prosecution revealed their intent to pursue the death penalty, asserting that Thompson’s murder was driven by Mangione’s ideological grievances against the health insurance sector.
In a formal court document, prosecutors outlined several considerations justifying the death penalty, asserting that Mangione’s actions exemplified “intention to kill” and that the murder involved “substantial planning and premeditation.” They emphasized that Mangione’s motive was to promote a political message and provoke public opposition against the health insurance industry through deadly violence.
The prosecution further pointed out that Mangione poses a continued threat, as he expressed a desire to target the industry as a whole and engaged in efforts to evade capture, including fleeing New York immediately after the incident while armed with a manufactured firearm and silencer.
