Luigi Mangione has arrived in New York City following his decision to waive extradition from Pennsylvania today, immediately facing a federal criminal court complaint upon his arrival.
The complaint, lodged by federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York, details serious charges against Mangione, including murder using a firearm, two counts of stalking, and an additional firearms-related offense.
Mangione is set to make his initial appearance in federal court after the complaint was unsealed this morning. He is charged with the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare.
According to the allegations outlined in the complaint, Mangione reportedly traveled from Atlanta to Manhattan via bus before the shooting incident. It is claimed that he utilized a mobile phone and the internet to “plan and carry out the stalking, shooting, and killing” of Thompson.
Previously reported, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has also imposed felony state charges on Mangione, including murder with intent to “evoke terror” along with other severe crimes. A grand jury indicted him earlier this week.
Karen Friedman Agnifilo, a well-known defense attorney in New York, commented on the developments, expressing that the federal authorities’ decision to add further charges to those already faced by Mangione is quite uncommon.
Notably, while New York abolished the death penalty in 2007, it remains a legal possibility at the federal level, potentially opening the door for prosecutors to seek the ultimate punishment for Mangione.
As reported, Thompson was fatally shot multiple times on December 4, prompting a statewide manhunt for the assailant.
Ultimately, Mangione’s arrest occurred in Pennsylvania after an employee at a McDonald’s contacted law enforcement. He is currently held at SCI Huntingdon, a correctional facility situated near Altoona, PA.
