The first season of Étoile concludes with intriguing cliffhangers, particularly highlighting the complex dynamics among ballet executives Jack (Luke Kirby) and Geneviève (Charlotte Gainsbourg), alongside star dancer Cheyenne (Lou de Laâge). This finale promises to keep audiences engaged as it explores the evolving relationships within the ballet world.
Jack and Geneviève’s endeavor to swap company members to ignite interest in ballet leads to significant tension in their relationship. By season’s end, Jack has made a hasty offer for an Artistic Director role to Cheyenne, following the hospitalization of the incumbent Nicholas (David Haig), who was critically ill.
When Nicholas recovers, Jack is forced to retract his offer, resulting in conflict with Cheyenne, who is already at odds with Geneviève after considering the position in New York. Although Cheyenne’s performances are celebrated, her artistic insight shines through her mentorship of young dancer Susu (LaMay Zhang). “The relationship between Cheyenne and Susu is truly beautiful,” de Laâge remarks, emphasizing Cheyenne’s passion for art and her admiration for hard-working, talented individuals.
As Cheyenne coaches Susu, their connection strengthens, positioning Cheyenne to consider the leadership role Jack has offered. Despite returning to New York reluctantly, Cheyenne realizes that she needs to discover her purpose, which she finds in both the potential position and her relationship with Susu.
On the other hand, Geneviève grapples with feelings of betrayal over Jack’s unilateral decision. There is a sense of jealousy regarding her exclusion from the offer. “She felt that their relationship was solid, and then suddenly, it feels like a betrayal,” Gainsbourg explains, alluding to the emotional upheaval between her character and Jack.
“I think I’ve come out clean,” Kirby countered lightly, adding complexity to Jack’s motivations. His offer to Cheyenne might have been influenced by their fraught relationship, especially after Geneviève’s rejection of his attempts to deepen their connection. “It’s a bit complicated,” Kirby admits, while Gainsbourg provides a differing perspective. “This situation invites many interpretations,” Kirby notes, signifying the multifaceted nature of their interpersonal relations and shared history intertwined with their passion for the arts.
As the finale concludes with an unexpected kiss between Jack and Cheyenne, the implications of that moment loom large. De Laâge candidly acknowledges her role in the kiss, while Kirby humorously adds complexity to their interactions. “No… I say don’t. Stop. Don’t stop…” he quips, teasing the precarious tension that defines their relationships.
With Season 2 on the horizon, it remains uncertain how these entangled dynamics will unravel. Fans are keen to see how the story evolves and whether the existing tensions can be alleviated.
