Macy’s Shutting Down More Than 60 Locations—Find Out If Your Local Store Is Affected

A List of the Macy’s Stores That Are Closing Down

In recent years, the retail landscape has drastically changed, with many traditional department stores struggling to attract customers as foot traffic dwindles. High-profile closures and bankruptcies, such as those of Lord & Taylor and Century 21, highlight this trend. Now, Macy’s has joined the ranks of retailers closing locations, with the chain initially announcing the shutdown of 150 stores by 2026. To date, the company has already closed 66 locations.

The closures span a total of 21 states, affecting consumers in places such as Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Shoppers in these states should check to see if their local Macy’s is on the list of those set to close, which can be found in the full store closure list here.

In a statement earlier this year, Macy’s CEO and chairman, Tony Spring, discussed the reasoning behind the closures, saying, “Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service.” This approach indicates that the company aims to streamline its operations and focus on locations that are performing better.

Despite the closures, Macy’s plans to continue operating its remaining stores, with a specific emphasis on enhancing their offerings in fashion, home, and beauty products. For instance, the celebrated Macy’s in Herald Square, known for being a prominent event location for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, is not on the closure list at this time. This flagship store, founded in 1858 by Rowland Hussey Macy, is a significant presence in New York City.

Looking forward, Macy’s intends to maintain its portfolio of other 350 stores and will expand its luxury offerings through the opening of additional Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury locations nationwide. This strategy reflects a shift towards catering to the luxury market as part of its overall business model going forward.
