Madhuri Dixit Participates in Candid Podcast with Family on Parenting and Identity

Madhuri Dixit and Dr. Shriram Nene engaged in a heartfelt discussion about family dynamics, privilege, and cross-cultural experiences during an episode of Dr. Nene’s podcast, featuring their two sons and Dr. Nene’s parents.

During this unique family gathering, Madhuri and Dr. Nene shared insights into their lives as parents, exploring themes of identity and their experiences as part of the immigrant community. Their sons, Arin and Ryan, joined them, bringing a younger perspective to this intimate conversation.

Reflecting on their life experiences across three continents, the family discussed the privileges they have enjoyed compared to previous generations. Dr. Nene pointed out that his sons have grown up amidst “some luxuries,” to which Ryan humorously suggested that “some” was an understatement. Dr. Nene emphasized that while it’s essential to embrace one’s background, recognizing the distinction between privilege and entitlement is crucial. He remarked, “You should never be afraid to accept who you are. But privilege should come with responsibility and gratitude. You can’t control where you’re born, but you can choose what you give back.”

The dialogue also touched upon their experiences living abroad compared to life in India. Dr. Nene asked his mother, who immigrated to the U.S. in the 1970s, about her feelings regarding life in America. “I like being here, but I also miss my home,” she reflected, noting the significant changes India has undergone over the years. Dr. Nene added that there are now more opportunities in India than ever before, stating, “Opportunity and hope are here now. Earlier, we had to outsource so much, but now India is building for itself.”

He acknowledged the hurdles each generation faces, recalling his own journey as a UK citizen who traveled to the U.S. to start anew. He remarked on the challenges his sons faced when they navigated reverse migration upon returning to India.

Ryan previously discussed the awareness of his privilege in an earlier episode. Dr. Nene counterbalanced this by indicating that their family upbringing was intentionally grounded. “We never raised you with a silver spoon,” he asserted, to which Ryan added, “We’ve definitely had it easier than most. Whether we’re grounded or not—I’d never claim it myself. I just hope that’s how we come across.”

Madhuri Dixit, renowned for her performances in iconic films like Dil Toh Pagal Hai and Devdas, has been married to Dr. Nene since 1999. Together, they continue to intertwine their cultural narratives both on-screen and in their personal lives.
