Madrid Open 2025: Key Highlights and Schedule

The highly anticipated Madrid Open 2025 is underway, featuring top players like Aryna Sabalenka and Jack Draper. Fans can catch all the action live on Sky Sports.

Britain’s Jack Draper has advanced to the quarter-finals, benefiting from Matteo Berrettini’s retirement due to injury. Draper, currently the top seed following the exit of competitors Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz, will meet America’s Taylor Fritz in the fourth round on Wednesday, with coverage starting at 3 PM.

Notably, Monday’s matches faced interruptions due to a nationwide power outage affecting large parts of Spain and Portugal. Although initial concerns indicated potential further delays on Tuesday, the power was successfully restored.

In an update from tournament organizers, it was confirmed: “Power supply has been restored at the Caja Mágica. To ensure the proper functioning of the entire facility, gates will open at 11:00 AM, and play will resume at 12:00 PM, as originally scheduled.”

Zverev suffered an early exit in the third round, eliminated by Argentine player Francisco Cerundolo. Meanwhile, Fritz was defeated in straight sets by Norway’s Casper Ruud. In a surprising turn, Novak Djokovic experienced his third consecutive loss, falling to unseeded Italian Matteo Arnaldi, and subsequently announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Italian Open in Rome.

Projected Draw for Jack Draper

QF – Karen Khachanov or Tommy Paul.
SF – Alex de Minaur/Stefanos Tsitsipas/Lorenzo Musetti
F – Casper Ruud

Performance of British Players

As Draper prepares to face Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals—after Paul triumphed in a decisive match against Karen Khachanov—other British players have not fared as well. Cam Norrie and Jacob Fearnley were eliminated in earlier rounds, losing to lucky loser Gabriel Diallo and Grigor Dimitrov, respectively. Additionally, Billy Harris faced defeat in qualifying against Ethan Quinn.

Sadly, there are no British female players remaining in the competition, with Emma Raducanu falling to Marta Kostyuk in a closely contested three-set match. Raducanu’s exit followed Katie Boulter‘s swift defeat by Jasmine Paolini, with Boulter losing in just 56 minutes. Similarly, British No. 3 Sonay Kartal encountered a tough match against the in-form Elina Svitolina, while Fran Jones had previously bowed out in the first round after progressing through the qualifiers.
