Tennis Highlights: Fearnley and Swiatek Advance in Madrid
In a gripping clash, Fearnley had the crucial task of serving to remain in the match as play resumed. Despite a shaky start with a double fault, he managed to fend off pressure from Dimitrov, maintaining his composure.
The world number 16, Dimitrov, was poised to take the match with a second match point at 6-5 on Fearnley’s serve. However, Fearnley displayed resilience by saving the point and extending the contest into a tie-break.
Once in the tie-break, Dimitrov seized control, executing a series of strong plays that culminated in him winning the final five points. This victory set him up for a showdown against either Cameron Norrie from Britain or Canada’s Gabriel Diallo.
Earlier in the day, defending champion Iga Swiatek showcased her grit as she secured her ninth consecutive victory in Madrid. She triumphed over Russia’s Shnaider with a scoreline of 6-0, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4.
Although Swiatek struggled with over 50 unforced errors during the match, she managed to save an impressive 11 out of 13 break points, ultimately gaining the upper hand against Shnaider.
Swiatek is set to face Madison Keys next, who previously defeated her in the Australian Open semi-finals en route to claiming her first Grand Slam title. Keys advanced by defeating Croatia’s Donna Vekic with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
Looking ahead, top-ranked Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, British number one Jack Draper, and Daniil Medvedev from Russia are all scheduled to take the court later on Tuesday.
