On Monday afternoon, extensive power outages impacted large regions of Spain, spreading into Portugal and France, leading to significant disruptions in both residential and commercial areas. Transportation systems were severely affected as well, with the exact cause of the blackout still under investigation. Major cities including Lisbon, Madrid, Seville, Barcelona, and Valencia experienced outages starting around 12:30 PM CET.
In response to the power failure, play has been halted at the Madrid Open tennis tournament, as reported by Sky News. Additionally, the city’s underground rail system was evacuated, leaving traffic signals non-operational. Air traffic in Spain and Portugal has also faced disruptions in various airports due to the outages.
Red Eléctrica, which serves as Spain’s national electricity grid operator, has announced that it is collaborating with energy providers to restore power in the impacted areas. In a recent update, the company stated, “We are beginning to recover power in the north and south of the peninsula, which is key to gradually addressing the electricity supply.”
