Goodspeed Musicals to Debut Ragtime in 2025 Season
Goodspeed Musicals has announced that the acclaimed musical Ragtime will kick off its 2025 season, running from April 25 to June 15 at The Goodspeed in East Haddam, Connecticut. This powerful production delves into the intersecting lives of three distinct American families, reflecting their pursuit of the American Dream through the rich sounds of ragtime, jazz, and show tunes.
Ragtime, which features a compelling book by Terrence McNally, is supported by music from Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. The musical draws inspiration from E. L. Doctorow’s novel, which serves as its foundation.
Set against the backdrop of a bustling and transformative New York City at the turn of the 20th century, Ragtime intricately intertwines the stories of an affluent woman, a creative Jewish immigrant, and a hopeful pianist from Harlem. Their journeys highlight the era’s stark contrasts, addressing enduring themes of wealth versus poverty, freedom in the face of prejudice, and the oscillation between hope and despair. With its Tony Award-winning score that beautifully marries various musical styles, this production promises to be a poignant narrative reflecting the complexity of American life.
The cast for Ragtime is notable for its size, making it one of the largest ensembles in Goodspeed’s history. Mamie Parris will take on the role of Mother, with an impressive résumé that includes performances in The Goodspeed’s The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Broadway hits like Cats and School of Rock. Michael Wordly will portray Coalhouse Walker Jr., while David R. Gordon will be featured as Tateh. Brennyn Lark, known for her work in Broadway’s Les Misérables, is set to play Sarah, with Edward Watts, recognized for roles in shows like Thoroughly Modern Millie, taking on the character of Father. The younger characters will be portrayed by Behr Marshall (Younger Brother), Sawyer Delaney (Little Boy), and Sofie Nesanelis (Little Girl).
The ensemble cast includes a talented group of performers, such as Jordan Alexander and Shaunice Maudlyn Alexander, alongside seasoned actors like Blair Goldberg (Emma Goldman) and Stephen Tewksbury (Grandfather/Conklin). This extensive ensemble highlights the diversity and richness of the story being told.
Taking the helm as director is Christopher Betts, known for his acclaimed work at prestigious venues such as Yale Rep and Hartford Stage. Choreography will be led by Sara Edwards, an accomplished associate choreographer with Broadway experience. The music direction will be handled by Adam Souza, Goodspeed’s Resident Music Director, who has an extensive roster of successful productions under his belt.
The production team comprises skilled creatives, including scenic designer Emmie Finckel, costume designer Stephanie Bahniuk, and lighting designer Charlie Morrison, each contributing their unique expertise to bring this intricate story to life. Sound design will be managed by Jay Hilton, a veteran in audio production, ensuring that the musical’s rich auditory tapestry resonates with audiences. Tenel Dorsey will oversee wigs, hair, and makeup design, adding the finishing touches to the characters’ appearances.
Chris Zaccardi will serve as the Production Stage Manager, ensuring the production runs smoothly. Casting for Ragtime has been conducted by Paul Hardt of Hardt Casting, bringing together a diverse and talented group of artists for this ambitious project.
