Charges Filed Against Jordanian Man for Mid-Flight Incident on Sydney-Bound Plane
A Jordanian citizen has been charged following an alleged attempt to open the doors of a plane en route to Sydney. The incident occurred on a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Saturday night.
The man, identified as 46-year-old Shadi Taiseer Alsaaydeh, reportedly tried to access the rear emergency exit of the aircraft during the flight. After being escorted to a middle seat by airline staff, he allegedly attempted to open another emergency exit door.
In response to the escalating situation, both crew members and fellow passengers intervened to restrain Alsaaydeh, during which he reportedly assaulted an airline crew member.
Upon the plane’s arrival in Sydney, officers from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) were ready to meet the flight. Alsaaydeh was subsequently charged with two counts of endangering the safety of an aircraft and one count of assaulting cabin crew. Each of these charges carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison.
Acting Superintendent Davina Copelin of the AFP expressed serious concern regarding the incident, emphasizing that such dangerous behavior on flights will not be tolerated. She stated, “The actions of this man could have had tragic consequences, and passengers and airline staff shouldn’t have to put up with unruly, violent, or dangerous behavior on flights.”
Furthermore, the AFP underscored their commitment to policing criminal actions on aircraft, especially those that could threaten the safety of passengers and crew. They reaffirmed that any individual who engages in such conduct will face legal repercussions.
