A man has been charged with murder following a fire that resulted in the tragic death of Chicago Fire Department Captain David Meyer.
According to Patrick Cleary, President of Chicago Fire Union Local 2, there is strong evidence suggesting that 44-year-old Charles Green was responsible for starting the blaze.
On Wednesday, at approximately 4 a.m., a fire erupted in a garage, prompting firefighters to respond swiftly. After successfully dousing the flames, the structure unexpectedly collapsed during salvage operations, as reported by CFD Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt.
A mayday alarm was issued shortly before 4:20 a.m., and Captain Meyer, aged 54, was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Captain Meyer dedicated 28 years to the Chicago Fire Department, having been a part of the team assigned to Truck 29 on the west side, and previously served as a lieutenant on Truck 35. He leaves behind his parents, a wife, three daughters, and a son, as noted by Commissioner Nance-Holt.
In a demonstration of community support, University of Iowa Police assisted in arranging a rapid return for one of Meyer’s daughters, who is currently studying there.
