Man Charged Following Climb of Big Ben’s Elizabeth Tower
A man has been taken into custody after an extraordinary incident involving his ascent of Big Ben’s Elizabeth Tower, located at the Palace of Westminster in central London, on Saturday.
Daniel Day, a 29-year-old resident of Palmerston Road in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, is facing charges for causing a public disturbance and trespassing on a protected site, according to the Metropolitan Police.
Following his climb, Day has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court this coming Monday.
The emergency services were alerted at 07:24 GMT on Saturday about a protestor scaling the iconic clock tower while displaying a Palestinian flag. This act of protest garnered significant public attention and concern.
After spending over 16 hours on a precarious ledge of the tower, Day was safely brought down in a cherry picker as Big Ben struck midnight. His descent marked the conclusion of what authorities referred to as a “protracted incident.”
Local law enforcement confirmed that Day was arrested once he safely reached the ground. The unusual situation resulted in the closure of Westminster Bridge, restricted access to one exit at the Westminster Underground Station, and temporary closure of Bridge Street. Additionally, tours of the Parliamentary Estate were canceled as a precautionary measure.
A small assembly of supporters gathered behind a police cordon beneath the tower, expressing their solidarity with chants of “free Palestine” and referring to Day as a “hero.”
