A man has been apprehended and formally charged in connection with the theft of a noteworthy costume from the Festival Theatre located on Nicolson Street in Edinburgh.
According to Police Scotland, a 34-year-old suspect was taken into custody following the theft that occurred at the theatre. Authorities were alerted to the incident on Thursday, March 27, 2025.
As reported by the Edinburgh Reporter, the stolen item is a faux fur cloak, which was worn by the character known as The White Witch in the production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. To date, the cloak has not been recovered.
Tom O’Connell, the producer of the show, addressed the theft through a social media announcement, stating: “The faux fur coat of the White Witch from our acclaimed production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe has been stolen, and it is still missing!”
In his message, he emphasized the urgency of the situation: “Our production is scheduled for a week in May, and we urgently need this handmade (and costly) coat returned. This is not a publicity stunt; we genuinely need it back!”
This adaptation of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, directed by Michael Fentiman and based on an original production by Sally Cookson, first premiered at Leeds Playhouse in 2017. It has since transitioned to London’s Bridge Theatre, toured across the United Kingdom, and enjoyed runs in the West End and Birmingham.
The upcoming performances of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe at the Festival Theatre are set for May 13 to May 17, 2025, coinciding with the momentous 75th anniversary of the original publication of C.S. Lewis’s classic novel.
