The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have reported that a man from a Mi’kmaq First Nation had an altercation with a fisheries officer, allegedly striking the officer with his vehicle during an inspection early Saturday morning.
According to a statement released by the RCMP, a 36-year-old resident of Sipekne’katik First Nation was detained near Highway 7 in Smiths Settlement, located approximately 45 kilometers east of Halifax.
Although the fisheries officer was unharmed, the driver faces charges of assault with a weapon.

Authorities have indicated that the fisheries officer was conducting an inspection at Eel Pond, adjacent to Highway 7, when the man, driving an Acura, hit the officer while he was instructing him to stop.
RCMP officers apprehended the driver at the scene, and a subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered an extendable baton and drug paraphernalia.
The individual was later released and is expected to appear in Dartmouth provincial court on August 20. Additionally, another man present during the incident was apprehended by fisheries officers related to a Fisheries Act investigation but has since been released.
