A 37-year-old man tragically lost his life while in police custody in Bedford, Nova Scotia, following a response to a service call related to a mental health crisis. The Halifax Regional Police reported that they received the call around 10:20 PM on Friday, attending to a situation involving the man.
Upon their arrival, police stated that the individual became violent, leading them to deploy a Taser in an effort to subdue him. Following a brief struggle, officers successfully restrained the man, placed him in handcuffs, and contacted Emergency Health Services (EHS) for assistance.

Authorities noted that during custody, the man’s condition worsened. Officers initiated life-saving measures, utilizing naloxone to counteract potential opioid overdose, which continued when EHS and Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency personnel arrived on the scene. Despite efforts to revive him, the man was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
In a statement, police expressed their heartfelt condolences to the deceased man’s family and friends. The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service has been tasked with performing an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death.
This incident marks the second occurrence within the same week of a person dying in Halifax police custody, though officials indicated that the two cases are unrelated. As a result, the Serious Incident Response Team has been assigned to conduct a thorough investigation into these circumstances.
