Surfer in Hawaii Returns to Water Following Shark Attack
A 61-year-old surfer from Hawaii is eager to be back in the waves, just weeks after suffering a severe injury in a shark attack that resulted in the loss of part of his right leg.
Kenji Nonaka was bitten while surfing at the “Sand Piles” area of Waiehu Beach Park on Friday, November 1, according to a recent press release from County of Maui Police and Fire officials.
The attack caused significant damage, resulting in Nonaka’s leg being “completely severed just below the knee.” This harrowing experience interrupted his regular morning surfing sessions, a routine he maintained for more than three decades, as noted in a GoFundMe campaign established to support his recovery.
On November 7, an update on the fundraising page revealed that Nonaka had been discharged from the hospital and was filled with determination to begin his rehabilitation. He expressed his eagerness to return to the ocean he holds dear.
As of two weeks later, Nonaka reported that all his staples had been removed, and he was engaging in exercises tailored for one-legged recovery, making notable strides in his rehabilitation journey.
The GoFundMe campaign has garnered significant community support, raising over $107,000—exceeding its original target of $100,000.
In a recent interview with KITV, Nonaka shared his joy at being able to surf again, stating he has managed to catch waves ten times during his recovery. He conveyed his profound connection with the water, saying, “Water is not scared, just make me happy,” while also acknowledging a lingering fear of sharks following his ordeal.
On December 21, Nonaka returned to the ocean, adapting his approach to surfing by lying down or kneeling. He is currently planning to visit O’ahu with his wife to explore options for a prosthetic leg, as mentioned in the recent updates from his recovery fund.
Expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support, Nonaka stated, “So many people supported me and helped me. I so happy, I just appreciate them.”
