The Mandalorian & Grogu will further develop the narrative from the widely acclaimed Disney+ series, The Mandalorian, but one beloved character appears to be absent from the upcoming installment. This film marks Star Wars’ return to cinemas, arriving seven years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Although the franchise has not seen a theatrical release during this period, it has flourished on Disney+, starting with The Mandalorian in November 2019 and branching into series such as The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and the soon-to-be-released Skeleton Crew.
At the Chicago Fan Expo, actor Temuera Morrison confirmed his absence from The Mandalorian & Grogu, as reported by ScreenRant. Morrison is well-known for portraying Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones and has taken on various clone characters related to Jango, including the Clone Troopers in Revenge of the Sith and Boba Fett in both The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. During the panel titled “From Clone Troopers to Bounty Hunters,” Morrison indicated that he has not been contacted by Disney or Lucasfilm regarding a return for The Book of Boba Fett Season 2.
Where Boba Fett Could Return in Disney’s Star Wars Universe
The prospect of The Mandalorian & Grogu is intriguing, particularly as it appears that Disney has opted for a cinematic approach rather than continuing with a traditional fourth season. Footage unveiled at D23 has confirmed the return of Zeb, a character that first appeared in the animated series Star Wars: Rebels and made his live-action debut in Season 3 of The Mandalorian. Talks regarding Sigourney Weaver potentially taking on a significant role have circulated, although no official announcements have been made.
Many fans are eager to understand what kind of story merits a leap from streaming to cinemas. Interestingly, another Star Wars film is in the works, directed by Dave Filoni, which aims to be an Avengers-style crossover featuring characters from The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, and Skeleton Crew. Speculation suggests this might loosely adapt Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire novels, with Boba Fett potentially playing a pivotal role, especially since his character is widely recognized and could attract a broader audience to the film.
This is not the first instance in which Morrison has expressed discontent over Boba Fett’s portrayal. He recently shared his desire to return to The Mandalorian and “steal an episode,” particularly after the series previously devoted a full episode to another lead character. It’s possible that Boba Fett may make an appearance in the forthcoming Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, but his most likely return is anticipated in Ahsoka Season 2, setting the groundwork for Filoni’s eventual Star Wars crossover movie.
The Mandalorian & Grogu is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026.
