Manhattan Executive Faces Severe Charges for Alleged Sexual Assaults
A private equity executive has been accused of committing horrific acts of sexual violence in his New York City apartment, which prosecutors have described as a “torture chamber.” Ryan Hemphill is facing a multitude of charges, including the alleged rape of six women over a five-month period, during which he reportedly employed extreme measures of physical and psychological abuse.
Hemphill, who was arrested last month and remains in custody, has pleaded not guilty to a 116-count indictment that includes charges of predatory sexual assault among others, stemming from incidents that began last October. The 43-year-old’s background as a lawyer is particularly concerning to authorities, who argue he leveraged his professional status to intimidate victims, threatening them with arrest or even to make them “disappear” if they spoke out.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg commented on the severity of the situation, stating, “The defendant told these survivors that he was untouchable. The indictment makes clear that he was wrong.” During his arraignment, Hemphill appeared subdued in court, his hands cuffed and holding a cross behind his back, as prosecutors outlined the gruesome details of the alleged crimes.
If found guilty, Hemphill could face life imprisonment. Notably, he was acquitted in a 2015 case related to domestic violence, where he admitted to deriving pleasure from asphyxiating his then-girlfriend during intimate encounters.
Assistant District Attorney Mirah Curzer indicated to Judge Ann E. Scherzer that the six identified victims might only represent a fraction of Hemphill’s total offenses. Evidence from his apartment, conveniently located near the Empire State Building, revealed extensive surveillance footage and numerous images of women in compromising positions, suggesting a pattern of abuse that could encompass many more victims.
Prosecutors have also detailed a concerning inventory of weapons and drugs found in Hemphill’s residence, including high-capacity magazines and various controlled substances such as heroin and fentanyl. In a recent press release, authorities disclosed some of the items retrieved from his property, such as handcuffs and a cattle prod, along with threatening messages sent to victims.
Hemphill is accused of exploiting dating platforms, particularly those that cater to “sugar daddy” relationships, to meet his victims. He allegedly framed his interactions as role-play scenarios involving dominance, luring women with promises of substantial payments for companionship; however, many did not receive the agreed-upon compensation, and some were given counterfeit money.
In a calculated manipulation, Hemphill reportedly encouraged victims to share their own histories of trauma and then reenacted those experiences during the assaults. The prosecutor noted that Hemphill took advantage of his victims’ vulnerabilities and disregarded boundaries they had established in their interactions.
Among his more brutal actions, Hemphill is claimed to have incapacitated victims chemically and physically, using restraints, duct tape, and electric shock devices. One victim was allegedly kept chained to a bed for hours as she pleaded for release.
Bragg underscored the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the profound power imbalance in Hemphill’s actions, stating, “He wielded his law degree and money as both sword and shield, coercing and silencing survivors.” Hemphill faces additional charges relating to witness tampering, including an allegation of offering financial incentives to a victim to withdraw her police complaint.
The courtroom proceedings occurred in close proximity to the ongoing trial of Harvey Weinstein, drawing parallels between two high-profile cases of sexual misconduct. Judge Scherzer decided against granting bail for Hemphill, citing concerns about his financial resources and influential connections, which could facilitate his absconding from justice.
Hemphill’s attorney, a public defender, suggested redirecting him to a rehabilitation program addressing substance abuse issues; however, the judge maintained that the risk posed by Hemphill necessitated confinement. The chilling nature of the allegations was further echoed by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who stated, “The details in this case are beyond disturbing — a sustained, calculated campaign of violence and cruelty that targeted vulnerable women,” asserting that such predatory behavior is unacceptable and will be dealt with decisively by law enforcement.
