Voters in the Transcona district of Winnipeg are set to head to the polls on Tuesday to participate in a key provincial byelection. This election comes following the passing of Nello Altomare, who served as the Manitoba education minister until his death in January.
The Transcona seat has long been a stronghold for the New Democratic Party (NDP), with the constituency frequently supporting the party. Since 1988, the only time it has elected a representative from another party—the Progressive Conservatives—was once.
Shannon Corbett, a vice-principal, is the NDP candidate vying for the position. The Progressive Conservative party has put forth former city councillor Shawn Nason as their candidate. Additionally, Brad Boudreau is representing the Liberal party, while Susan Auch, a former Olympic speedskater, is running as an Independent candidate.
Currently, the NDP controls a majority in the legislative assembly, holding 33 out of the 57 seats. In contrast, the Progressive Conservatives occupy 21 seats, the Liberals have one, and there is also one Independent member.
