Manoj Kumar Laid to Rest as His Sons Scatter His Ashes in the Ganges

The ashes of legendary actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar were immersed in the Ganges at Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar. Kumar, known for his patriotic roles, passed away on April 4 at 87.

On Saturday morning, the ashes of renowned film actor and director Manoj Kumar were respectfully immersed in the Ganges at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar. The solemn event, held in the presence of close family members, included the completion of final rites at the venerated Brahma Kund, where the atmosphere was filled with sacred chants and rituals.

The immersion ceremony was led by the family priest and attended by Kumar’s sons, Kunal and Vishal Goswami, along with other relatives. After the ceremony, Kunal expressed hope for their father’s peace, stating, “The ashes have been immersed in the Ganges, and we pray for the peace of his soul through the blessings of Mother Ganga.”

Veteran actor Manoj Kumar, who passed away at the age of 87 on April 4, succumbed to a prolonged illness and breathed his last at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital at 4:03 am.

Born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad—now part of Pakistan—Kumar became a significant figure in Indian cinema. He earned the affectionate title “Bharat Kumar” for his patriotic portrayals in films such as Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, and Shaheed, thus solidifying his legacy in socially conscious and nationalistic narratives throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

In addition to his acting prowess, Kumar was a successful filmmaker. His directorial debut, Upkar (1967), garnered the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film, marking the beginning of a prolific career. Subsequent films like Purab Aur Paschim (1970) and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974) showcased his ability to blend critical appreciation with commercial viability.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences to Kumar’s family in a heartfelt letter to his wife, Shashi Goswami. He noted, “The legendary actor and filmmaker showcased the pride of India in a powerful way through his films. His work will continue to inspire generations to work for the country and society.”

On April 5, Kumar received full state honors during his cremation at Mumbai’s Pawan Hans crematorium. The ceremony was attended by a number of prominent figures from the film industry, including Amitabh Bachchan, Salim Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Arbaaz Khan, who gathered to pay their respects to this beloved icon of Indian cinema.
